As a self-proclaimed fashionista, I live for the thrill of trying something new in fashion with the climax being the execution of a perfectly styled outfit without getting piercing stares from everyone at the party. I love using my imagination, my knowledge of what’s en trend and my own personal style to put together every one of my ensembles… Some people take risks at the Black Jack table, I take risks in my own closet.
At our first official MsFit photoshoot, I put Jessica to the challenge of wearing something she normally wouldn’t pick out. We went with a beyond unbelievable Stella McCartney gown with one of my favorite trends, sheer paneling on the sides, paired with a gold belt… it wasn’t the hardest thing in the world to convince her to wear it. And I went with my favorite trend for this spring, the crop top and skirt combo, with a Herve Leger top and Dolce & Gabbana floral print skirt and my own shoes.
This spring, I thought, with so many emerging trends hitting the streets, why not inspire some of our Ms Fits to take a little risk with these lovely new styles…
CROP TOPS~
I know what you’re thinking… Nothing with the word crop will ever be in my fashion vocabulary. But this trend is so hot right now, just give it a chance… you never know if you never try. Pair a simple skirt that sits about 2 inches above your naval with a patterned crop top that hits you right below your bra line and presto! That exposed area of your torso is typically the easiest to tone as far as abs go and therefore will look the best peeping out of your crop top.
Here are a few inspirations to guide to crop top heaven…
And p.s. If you’re still not sold on this whole look because you don’t think you’ve got the bod… check out this feature about a gorgeous girl, who’s a size 12, that took the risk and it paid off beautifully!
SHEER PANELING~
This is like the cousin to the crop top trend.. It’s been around a bit longer, but perhaps because it covers a bit more than its crop top relative and still leaves little to the imagination. I love this look because it’s ethereal, sexy and kind of bad ass all at the same time. Whether the sheer paneling is up top, or a detail at the hem of a skirt, it’s definitely something to embrace for spring!
FLATS~
Flats are what my husband calls the ugliest things in the world.. that’s coming from a person who’s never known what it’s like to wear heels for 8 hours straight. Luckily for us heel-wearers, this season, flats have gone flat-out big and have slowly made their way onto the list of acceptable-shoes-to-wear-out-at-night list. As a shoe-obsessed freak, I never thought I’d be ok with this, but after checking out all the new styles, I may just have to succumb to wearing a fab pair of flats out at night and being ridiculously comfortable for once.
COLOR~
Here’s one that is so easy to pull off, yet everyone around me seems to always be going Beetlejuice. PUT ON SOME COLOR, GIRL! It’s refreshing, it’ll make you feel alive, it draws attention, it never goes out of style, it brings out your best features, it’s more fun to coordinate with other colors and prints, the list goes on… Here are a few inspirations to get you out of your doldrums and into living la vida color!
CULOTTES~
This trend is making a courageous comeback this season. It’s very Katherine Hepburn, it’s very Parisian chic and it’s very unsexy to the male species (as I have once been told by a male fashion photographer). But who cares about them anyway… This one’s for your lady friends. These big pants were big about 8 years ago and then went on a bit of a hiatus, but I sure am glad they’re back, and I think to stay for at least another year or two. Pair your culottes with a fun crop top or simple sleek t-shirt and give the whole look some height with a fab pair of heels.
OVERALLS~
You could be a farmer in these clothes, but I prefer chic trendsetter instead. Overalls aren’t just child’s play anymore, they’re hitting the streets in a very mature way. Whether they’re denim or leather, shorts or skirt overalls, I am obsessed with this returned trend. It’s just something new to try and rock with a high pair of heels and a pretty top out to dinner or party… or with a cute pair of espadrilles and even a crop top for lunch with your favorite MsFits!
As one of our favorite authors, Paulo Coelho once wrote, “If it’s still in your mind, it is worth taking the risk.” Get out there MsFits, and take a fashion risk!
