All In the Details

As some of you may know, I’ve spent this entire summer renovating my family’s new home. And, as we’re approaching the home stretch (pun intended), I wanted to share some of what we’ve accomplished.

Because I’ve been doing the design on my own; no designer, no architect, and a husband that says, “sure, that looks nice/I don’t care” about everything, I’ve had to take our 1950’s traditional house, design it and ultimately bring to life an aesthetic that is by no means traditional. I really wanted to keep the feel of mid-century glamour but mix in my own taste without making it look too overdone. To achieve that, I was very meticulous about each and every detail because to me, it’s truly the little things that make the biggest impact, and boy, have they been worth my while!

This pocket door was original to the house. I didn’t want to get rid of it, so I turned into one of my many projects…

Black paint + gloss gave this sliding door some life. It's original to the house so I didn't want to get rid of it... it just needed a fresh coat of paint.

Saw these rope detail moldings and just had to have them somewhere in the house…

The detail within the detail

The detail within the detail

So I decided to make picture frame moldings for the living room to add dimension and an unexpected detail to an otherwise simple room.

Also adding the detail to the mantel tied the room all together.

Adding traditional woodwork to the first floor, especially the hallways really made the space appear wider and gave it more life.

When it came to the dining room, I really wanted to do something special and what could be more special that this Scalamandre zebra wallpaper?

I’ve always wanted a grand ballroom type space with beautiful checkered floors but didn’t want to rip out the original dining room hardwood, so instead I took on my next project of painting them.

On a “fresh” 90 degree day, I started with sanded floors and boundless energy. I painted two coats of primer that smelled extra pungent in the heat, waited for it to dry for 24 hours, then painted two coats of white floor paint, waited for that to dry for 24 hours and then it was time to put my geometry skills to work. I had to figure out the best scale for the squares and the exact angle that I wanted them to go in as not to look like kitchen tile but more like tile in a grand foyer. Two days later, I had my tape in place and it was time for the black floor paint. With dogs, builders, electricians and dust rolling in and out (no one took heed of my blockades), it was a painstaking three weeks of hand-and-knees touch ups of each and every single square. And then like a good polish change, a beautiful clear coat to give it a shiny finish.

Another detail that I went bonkers for were the doors and the door hardware. I must have spent weeks looking for the perfect interior doors and finally came upon these that are truly traditional but none that I had seen elsewhere.

IMG_5144

I added these egg shaped glass door knobs on all the “main doors,” like the bathroom and bedroom doors, for that extra touch of traditional-meets-unexpected, and more simple chrome egg shaped knobs on the rest of the doors.

IMG_5143

IMG_5175

I like to design interiors the way I style my clothes; to me, a look is more fun when I can mix and match a few pieces instead of having everything be so matchy-matchy. I try to keep the commonality between the pieces in at least one detail. In this case, the chrome finish and the egg shape did the trick for me.

I also tied in the glass hardware in other parts of the house. The lever handles for the French doors are a different style, but continue the look from the other doors into the kitchen.

And these knobs on the kitchen pantry….

Lighting is another one of my greatest obsessions. To choose just one for each room wasn’t easy, but I wanted to find something unique for each room, as well as something that could (potentially) stand up to the test of two wild growing boys.

IMG_5157

My obsession with flowers grows and grows… I put these flush mount lights in the hallways with these gorgeous crystal-like bulbs.

IMG_5177

To protect our home, or to simply get in, I fell in love with this grizzly lion knocker that took center stage at the front of the house.

IMG_4144

I added a matching chrome entry handle and decided on this gentle blue door color to match all the blue hydrangeas planted in front.

IMG_5158

And for protection, my grand Foo Dog.

Of all the rooms, the one that I fell deeply in love with happened to be the absolute smallest room in the house. I loved the concept of turning this tiny powder room into the most luxurious piece of 100 square feet this house has seen. It started with my obsession with this wallpaper from the Netherlands that I had seen many years ago, and spending weeks upon months adding each and every detail to make it look wonderfully embellished but with all the right pieces.

I found this Kohler pedestal sink basin but couldn’t get its matching pedestal in time, so I had my plumber finagle and somehow attach a different Kohler model with a more simple design and it actually came out better than the original.

Ok, bye!

Ok, bye!

I am by no means an interior designer by profession, but I have had a passion for interior design since I was a little kid. I loved and I hated every minute of this process, but I purely love every minute of what it looks like now. I can’t wait to show you guys the finished project, so stay tuned!

New Ms Fit Feature: Shana Novak

Shana Novak, still life photographer and founder of The Heirloomist

Shana Novak, still life photographer and founder of The Heirloomist

The concept of The Heirloomist is just so cool! And so is the photographer behind it.  I met Shana in college and was lucky enough to get to spend a semester with her in London our junior year. When I think back and remember her at that time, my memories of her are with a camera in hand, or around her neck. Always and at all times. It is so awesome to see how she has turned her life passion into her work, becoming a well known  still life photographer in New York City, and now the founder of this amazingly unique company, The Heirloomist. The concept behind The Heirloomist  is to give people the gift of turning cherished heirlooms into beautiful fine art.

WHAT IS KEEPING YOU BUSY THESE DAYS?

Growing The Heirloomist into a meaningful and useful brand is front and center right now. I also have publishing and advertising commercial clients for my still life photography business that get my full attention, too. I wish I could clone myself.

WHAT ARE YOU LOVING IN FITNESS AND FASHION RIGHT NOW?

I like that there is a focus on mind, body, soul instead of protein shakes and body mass building. Also, personally, my apartment in New York has a new gym on the rooftop…one of the treadmills has a direct view of the new World Trade Center–it’s such an inspiration to run at the sight of that.

My favorite thing is happening in fashion right now!! Athletic luxury. I have always loved wearing clothes that breathe, that move, are comfy… now I can find things that look put together and are technologically thought out. All the big brands are doing it and I hope it never goes away.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN PHOTOGRAPHY? WHAT INSPIRED THE CREATION OF THE HEIRLOOMIST?

Photography is in my DNA–both of my mothers’ parents were photographers. My Grandmother started me loving the stories behind family objects… The Heirloomist was invented to be the vehicle to explore the stories visually.

New Ms Fit Feature: Caitlin Milbury

Caitlin Milbury, manager of Exhale Spa, Barre and Yoga Instructor

Caitlin Milbury, Mind Body Manager of Exhale Spa, Core Fusion and Yoga Instructor,  and brand ambassador for Crane and Lion.

Alisa and I met Caitlin at a charity event for the Boys and Girls Club almost a year ago.  The three of us were like a little Fitness-Fashion team that day getting ready for the event and ended up spending quite a few hours together. From the very start I felt like I had known Caitlin for years. She is one of those ultra-cool, laid back, but obviously very ambitious, hardworking types… and to top it all off very funny and a lot of fun to be around. It is therefore no surprise she is an amazing fitness instructor at Exhale Spa. Caitlin has a great way of inspiring and connecting with her students to make her classes ultra-challenging and fun at the same time.  I make it to her classes whenever I can and I highly recommend giving it a try.

WHAT IS KEEPING YOU BUSY THESE DAYS?

My fantasy football team! This is my first year participating in a league with my family and things are getting very competitive. I’ve also been doing some more reading (I still believe in the good old paperback book!), which I find incredibly meditative.

WHAT ARE YOU LOVING IN FITNESS AND FASHION RIGHT NOW?

I’m loving Crane and Lion! I’ve just recently been named their newest brand ambassador and I’m absolutely loving rocking all of their Fall items. I especially love the “moto jacket”.

In fitness, I am loving exhale’s newest class offering, Core Fusion Extreme. This class is a high intensity interval class that will leave your heart rate pumping and your new outfit drenched in sweat. While I love teaching barre and yoga first and foremost, it has been so fun to integrate this new class into my regiment.

WHY DID YOU BECOME A FITNESS INSTRUCTOR AND WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR BARRE BEGINNERS?

Growing up I found myself the captain of most of my sports teams. It has always sort of been in my nature to love motivating those around me. Once I started working at exhale and got the shakes in thigh work in my first class, I was sold. My passion and dedication to Core Fusion allowed me to become a candidate for the teacher training program. I have since then moved into managing the mind-body program at exhale Battery Wharf. It’s a gift to love your job.

My best advice for Core Fusion/barre beginners is to leave all expectations and judgements at the door. The number one concern for new students is that they are afraid they will be the one uncoordinated person in the back who everyone is staring at. The good news is, nobody is looking at you! Barre is a mind-body method that encourages each guest to focus inward and prioritize alignment over reps. Your teacher is there to help you learn and progress safely and your peers are there to create a sphere of positive and encouraging energy, not to judge you.

New Ms Fit Feature: April Soderstrom

Jewelry Designer, April Soderstrom

Jewelry Designer, April Soderstrom

We’ve known April for quite a while now and have featured and written about her gorgeous jewelry on the blog, but we cannot believe it’s taken us this long to have April as one of our Ms Fit Features! We are so honored that this hard working, beautiful, stylish and oh-so fit and fabulous gal is our newest Ms Fit. We hope you love getting to know her just as much as we have…

WHAT IS KEEPING YOU BUSY THESE DAYS?

Keeping me busy…(muahhahhhh – insert evil laugh here)

I’ve added some really great staple pieces for fall to my collection that I’m really geeked about. The new Layer Up necklaces are a line of high end gold necklaces that all work really well together so the idea is to purchase a few different styles and wear them together or separately as you see fit.  Since I use the same type of chain in all the designs you can Layer Up the different necklaces and the end result will always be a cohesive, high end look – without the guesswork.

It’s pageant season!!!  I sponsor a handful of Miss USA states including Miss Massachusetts and Miss California and their state pageants are all coming up this fall and winter.  This means I get lots of inquiries for custom evening gown jewelry which is such a fun part of my business and something I really love because I get to work one on one with so many women across the country.

I’m gearing up for a press trip to New York at the end of September with my PR Agent, Lacey Wilson Bates of LWBPR.  We haven’t done a big trip like this in a couple of years and I’m really looking forward to showing off my newest pieces to some of the movers and shakers in the accessory world.  Right now we’re coordinating meetings with magazines, fashion editors, and setting up dinners and drinks in between so it’s going to be quite the trip!

WHAT ARE YOU LOVING IN FITNESS AND FASHION RIGHT NOW?

Fashion –  I’m probably a little late to the game on this one, but I’ve finally really bought in to the jeans that are a bit more high waisted.  I have a few pairs of the Madewell – High Riser Skinny Skinny Jeans and overall I feel like they make me look leggier and taller…win, win!  Add in some suede booties and a leather jacket and I’m ready for fall.

Health/Fitness –  I’m going to head in an odd direction for this one, but hang with me!  One of the best health changes I made in the last year is that I started doing some “sleep training.”  The overall goal is to fall asleep right away and wake up feeling refreshed and ready to go.  Isn’t that what we all want?!  Rule number one is painful, but a game changer.  Instead of having my phone plugged in on my nightstand I always leave it outside my bedroom… weekends too.  Eeeeek!  When the alarm goes off in the morning I have to get out of bed and leave the room to turn it off.  This keeps me from laying in bed at night or in the morning reading emails and/or scrolling through Instagram. Combine that with a few other sleep training techniques and my mornings are more productive, faster, and overall feel just a little lighter!

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED DESIGNING JEWELRY AND STARTING YOUR OWN BUSINESS?

I’ve always made jewelry for myself and friends as a hobby but had never really thought about it as a business.  While I was competing for Miss USA I met one of my best friends and now PR agent, Lacey Wilson.  A couple years after we met, she started her own accessories PR firm and gave me some friendly pressure to start taking my hobby to the next level. Cut to a few years later and my business has grown really organically from there.  In the beginning, I was worried I’d squash my love for the art of jewelry making by trying to profit from it, but so far it’s been the complete opposite.  There’s something really rewarding in creating a piece of art and having someone like it so much they’re willing to physically wear it.  Hearing someone tell me they wear a piece of my jewelry every day or it’s one of their favorite pieces just adds fuel to the creative fire and makes me excited to get to work.
