In their BAGS: Fashion Designer, Daniela Corte

We’ve been trying to keep up with the ever fabulous fashion designer, Daniela Corte since the start of our blog. This fashion designer, mama, wife, fitness junkie, jet setter and health nut surely has a lot she packs into her day (starting at 5:00am for a work out), and surely has a lot she packs into her bag to run to work, a girl’s dinner or to NYC to meet her fave, Kelly Ripa.

We couldn’t wait to dig into her confection of a bag to see what goodies were stowed away…

How delicious is this Fendi bag? Drooling!

Daniela’s favorite key chain, a bear, a little reminder of her kids because she calls them “bear.” Her favorite lip balm with the most kissable case. The eye is a compact mirror, how cool? Fresh Sugar lip balm. Sisley lip gloss. Chanel shadow. Daniela Corte yellow cuff.

Just wait until we get into her gym bag…

Our Little Tip for Keeping our Energy and Motivation Up: Crystals

crystals

Happy New Year Ms Fits!  We wanted to share our unique tip to help keep you motivated toward reaching your New Year goals….Crystals. Crystals have been used throughout history for their healing and energy capabilities and were considered sacred in many ancient civilizations. It would take the span of many books to cover crystals, the hundreds of different types, and their many uses, roles in traditions and rituals, place in healing and meditations, history, and the many different beliefs that surround their “powers,” so for simplicity I am just going to share a few of my favorites types (specifically the ones that just may help support new goals for 2016).  Wearing or carrying crystals is a very simple tool for adding a little positive boost to your energy and motivation!
I have had quite a few impactful experiences with crystals and now they are always around me. In the years since incorporating them into my life, I seem to continually meet many new “crystal people” and healers, and it is so fascinating what I have learned from them, specifically how differently people’s reactions can be to different stones. For example, some people will feel a heat, others will feel a coolness, vibrations, exaggerated heaviness, etc.. I even met a woman from New Zealand whose crystals shattered after they were done “doing their job” of removing negative energies. Many healers claim the crystals choose you, not the other way around. There is even a crystal for increasing fertility, like the chrysanthemum crystal (I have given this one to so many of my friends trying to get pregnant. Warning: So far, all have had babies).  I have also heard this many times, crystals seem to have a way of disappearing or moving on to other people that need them.

Crysanthemum Cyrstal

Crysanthemum Cyrstal

I know this might sound a little odd or new age to some, but crystals are simply known to have higher vibrations that work to boost energy, heal, increase spiritual connectedness, and help release negativity. My house is covered in them, I wear them a lot, I always seem to have a few on me.  I also have a crystal essence that was made for me by a dear friend that I spray everywhere. I use them in hopes to surround my family with positivity and create a space in my home with a healing “pure” energy. You can easily create this by placing quartz crystals in the four farthest points in your home (creating a energy parameter).

There are hundreds of crystals, but here are just a few for healing, to boost energy, motivation, and help release negative energy:

Carnelian Stone

Carnelian Stone

Carnelian Stone –  This is a power and motivation stone. Increase physical energy, ambition, and drive.  Said to bring a surge of life force and boost creative energies.  Supports courage, strength, vitality, increases enthusiasm. Helps to awaken one’s talents and aids in moving forward on a new path. The carnelian stone is considered a career stone and great to carry on you during interviews. Also protects against negative energies.

Golden Apatite

Golden Apatite

Golden Apatite – Increases motivation and builds up energy reserves. The yellow Apatite crystal is used for mental clarity, improved will power. Also said to increase creativity, confidence, aids in manifestation of one’s dreams, and even used to stimulate the metabolism for weight loss.

red-jasper

Red Jasper – Increase physical energy, vibrancy, and vitality. Said to enhance strength and energy and useful in generating muscle tissue, can enhance the effects of exercise. Overtime, Red Jasper can increase the amount of Chi, or energy force, in one’s energetic field.

Sun Stone

Sun Stone

Sun Stone – This is another energizing stone, stimulating leadership and will. It carries the light and happy energy of the Sun. Physically said to increase metabolism, digestions, and vitality. Sun stone can kindle the fire of leadership within those who carry or wear it. It is also a very healing stone of personal power, strength, and to bring in blessings.

Clear Quartz

Clear Quartz

Quartz (clear) – Amplification of one’s intentions, used for healing, cleansing, clearing of negative energies. Can assist in any type of healing, and generating prosperity. Also used to amplify the energies of other stones.

India Hicks, Designer and Founder

Every time I think of India Hicks, I think of that Elsie De Wolfe quote, the one that you may have run across once or twice on Instagram that says, “I am going to make everything around me beautiful-that will be my life.” That is exactly what India Hicks, her fragrances, gifts, accessories, style, and most importantly herself represents… so much beauty.  It is not always easy to express concepts like, the essence of relaxed yet luxurious island style, through digital images or social media,  but a quick browse around the India Hicks website and peek into any of her videos and you’ll see that is exactly what she has succeeded in doing.

I feel so lucky to have had the opportunity to meet India twice! And yes, she is so stunning and stylish, has so many fascinating and worldly, and of course Royal stories (having been a bridesmaid of Princess Diana) that she explains are so much a part of the inspiration behind her lifestyle brand and the design of her products which includes jewelry, bags, accessories, and beauty products (we can’t wait for you to check them out!).  India is also so down-to-earth cool and hysterically funny. Both times, she had rooms full of people thoroughly enjoying themselves and laughing. India is also very accessible and caring. It is therefore no surprise that she is growing her successful direct sales business through building relationships with 600 style ambassadors. She also gives back in many ways, one way is creating a special series which shares inspirational stories about people leading impactful lives called, Extraordinary Lives. I am still pinching myself that India has included me and my experience recovering from a stroke on her list!

We are so grateful to India for taking a moment during this busy time of year to share with us, and become our newest Ms Fit!

The Faces of Fashion with the Good Ones

Last night, Jessica and I had the privilege of joining a truly celebrated crew of people who were chosen as the Good One’s Fashion, Business and Marketing Icons. The ladies of the Good Ones, featured Jessica and myself as their Faces of Fashion and we were over the moon about it!

The event was a huge success where everyone was required to wear black, white or red, which was a really fun theme for a really fun collection of talented, smart, creative and philanthropic people. Jessica and I really admire the girls of the Good Ones, Carolyn Kim and Jennifer Brooke who founded this company in 2012 as a way of connecting people of varying professions and interests through hosting one of a kind events throughout Boston. What an amazing and truly dying art of connecting people, in person, to share ideas and talents and perhaps even making a new friend all the while!

Jessica Diaz, Co-Founder Ms Fit For Society

Jessica Diaz, (left) Co-Founder Ms Fit For Society

Jessica is a mom of two, Barre instructor, co-founder of Ms Fit For Society, and spokesperson for The American Stroke and Heart Association. Jessica is teaching Barre at Equinox and at Asana in Charlestown. Jessica is also in the process of becoming a Health Coach to better help her clients with nutrition, to offer a more rounded wellness approach to being healthy. Her role with the Stroke Association encourages her to help educate people of the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.

Jessica fell in love with the Barre twice in her life. Once in 2004, when she was first introduced to it while living in San Francisco, and again after having her second baby. What she loved most is that Barre class is toning, effective, and fun. She loved how much personal attention she received, while still enjoying a group exercising setting.

She was amazed at how just a few hours of Barre class a week had completely changed her body. Not only physically, but also giving her so much more energy. As a new mom, she needed that energy and she also loved that the hour class was a full body workout and helped her get back into her pre-baby shape. Jessica loved that the Barre classes allowed people to work at their own pace, using their own resistance and be challenging, yet safe enough for any fitness level.

After eight years of taking Barre classes, She knew that Barre would always be a part of her life and decided to begin teaching. Jessica became BarSculpt licensed in 2012. “ As a Barre teacher, I hope to bring the fun, challenge, and change, that this class has brought into my life”.

Alisa Kapinos, Co-founder, Ms Fit For Society

Alisa has been lucky enough to spend the last 10 years of her life working as a wardrobe stylist first on editorial shoots for magazines and commercials, meeting world renowned models and photographers, and then turning her focus on personal styling where she has witnessed some unbelievable closets, the good, the bad and the over-the-top. Since having her two sons, Alisa has also begun styling kids. As a mom, she realized how much moms really do invest in their kid’s clothes for fun, for sport, or whatever their daughters are telling them is trending that week, and how little time moms have to run a household, keep up a social calendar, take care of the kids, never mind have the time to keep up with their fashion demands. Alisa is also the co-founder of her two year old fitness/fashion blog Ms Fit for Society, a blog on everything fitness and fashion with a twist on everything else that’s keeping the Ms Fit’s lives on the go. “I think the goal in life is to be happy, and if I can focus my energy on the things that make me insanely happy, then I know I’ll be a better mom, wife and friend, all with a big smile on my face.”

Ruta Laukien, founder of Liquid Art House

Ruta Laukien, Founder of Liquid Art House

What began as a planned summer trip to visit relatives in the United States would become a serenditipitous start to Ruta’s American dream. At age 17, the Lithuanian native would seek temporary asylum to pursue an education, as the Russian army invaded her homeland. The meandering journey, from Worcester to Jacksonville to New York City, would ultimately see a J.D./M.B.A. from Duke University – a detour that led to a flourishing career as an Investment Banker on Wall Street.

Today, the mother of two and Back Bay resident is the trailblazing founder of Liquid Art House, the first gallery/restaurant hybrid to hit the hub. Her vision for “LAH,” which began back in law school as a Lithuanian-style Tea House, would sit with her for fifteen years. After the implosion of employer Bear Stearns, her idea regained steam until crystalling into an “art hospitality” restaurant concept. A lover of food, art, wine and travel, Laukien decided to combine all her passions under one roof. The 2011 Mass Challenge alum (her idea made it to 2nd round) would eventually bootstrap her startup, which opened in May 2014, in the landmark building, The Arlington.

New Ms Fit Feature: Shana Novak

Shana Novak, still life photographer and founder of The Heirloomist

Shana Novak, still life photographer and founder of The Heirloomist

The concept of The Heirloomist is just so cool! And so is the photographer behind it.  I met Shana in college and was lucky enough to get to spend a semester with her in London our junior year. When I think back and remember her at that time, my memories of her are with a camera in hand, or around her neck. Always and at all times. It is so awesome to see how she has turned her life passion into her work, becoming a well known  still life photographer in New York City, and now the founder of this amazingly unique company, The Heirloomist. The concept behind The Heirloomist  is to give people the gift of turning cherished heirlooms into beautiful fine art.

WHAT IS KEEPING YOU BUSY THESE DAYS?

Growing The Heirloomist into a meaningful and useful brand is front and center right now. I also have publishing and advertising commercial clients for my still life photography business that get my full attention, too. I wish I could clone myself.

WHAT ARE YOU LOVING IN FITNESS AND FASHION RIGHT NOW?

I like that there is a focus on mind, body, soul instead of protein shakes and body mass building. Also, personally, my apartment in New York has a new gym on the rooftop…one of the treadmills has a direct view of the new World Trade Center–it’s such an inspiration to run at the sight of that.

My favorite thing is happening in fashion right now!! Athletic luxury. I have always loved wearing clothes that breathe, that move, are comfy… now I can find things that look put together and are technologically thought out. All the big brands are doing it and I hope it never goes away.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN PHOTOGRAPHY? WHAT INSPIRED THE CREATION OF THE HEIRLOOMIST?

Photography is in my DNA–both of my mothers’ parents were photographers. My Grandmother started me loving the stories behind family objects… The Heirloomist was invented to be the vehicle to explore the stories visually.

New Ms Fit Feature: Melina Olivia DiPaola

Melina DiPaola, founder of Ride North End and E.T.C Juicery

Melina DiPaola, founder of Ride North End and E.T.C Juicery

WHAT IS KEEPING YOU BUSY THESE DAYS?

Everything!! Haha! Teaching about a dozen classes a week, and also trying to keep up with my own fitness goals and lifting regime. I am working on my unassisted pull-ups, handstands, and arm balances. In addition to the teaching itself, finding new music, creating new playlists and choreography and keeping things fresh and interesting for classes. The day-to-day operations of the studio- from member relations to social media to scheduling and taking other teachers’ classes is also quite the endeavor! We are working on the final touches to open the e.t.c. juicery and smoothie bar side of the business as well. Developing smoothie recipes, establishing the product line, and working with the vendors is super fun, yet time consuming.
WHAT ARE YOU LOVING IN FITNESS AND FASHION RIGHT NOW?

In fitness, I love, and always have loved, burpees. Crazy, I know. In my iron ride class that I teach (part ride, part exercises off of the bike mixing bodyweight, kettle bells, and med balls), we often end up doing 75-100 burps in a class. They do it all- cardio, strength, conditioning. Pragmatic fitness at its best. I also love anything and everything involving a kettlebell. I am also working on some more strength and skill-based goals these days in addition to the usual aesthetic goals. Now that I’ve pretty much nailed the headtsand, I’m experimenting with mastering the skills mentioned above that require great bodyweight strength.

For fashion, I am almost exclusively in workout clothes all of the time. Lululemon has always been my #1, because their clothes allow me to dress for fitness without looking unkempt. This weekend my mom, little sister and I stopped at the Newbury Street store and I picked up the Train Tough Crop in a kind of camo print (I love the styles that they come out with that have any kind of mesh cutout), and the vent-it-out crop in this amazing red snakeskin print. Super eye-catching, yet flattering, and perfect for teaching!
TELL US ABOUT YOUR  NEW STUDIO? HOW DID YOU GET STARTED WITH CYCLING?
Ride North End

Ride North End

Ride is my vision of what I always wanted in a cycling/fitness studio. The decor is both mellow and enlivening, with cedarwood walls, high ceilings (the studio itself is a former garage), and invigorating sultry lighting. We offer ride classes as well as iron ride, which is a hybrid cardio and strength training class where we use any modality from bodyweight to kettle bells to med balls. To me, strength and muscle building was always that missing link in most group fitness regimens that held people back form getting the full results they desired. One of the coolest things about ride is that in a few weeks it will be combined with my first baby, e.t.c. juicery. So the studio will be a one stop shop for health enthusiasts, covering your fitness and nutritional (and caffeine) needs.

All of our instructors have different styles, choreography, and musical tastes, but the intention is always the same: to give you the opportunity to destress and get a good hard sweat session. My personal style is an amalgam of everything I’ve observed, liked, loved, despised, and picked up over 14 years of taking hundreds of classes, as well as my knowledge of fitness in general. I like to plan a workout that is not only pragmatic and intense, but that also appeals to the mind/psyche and releases a certain vibe of invigoration and positivity.

The King of Bling – Neil Lane

Doing this interview with Neil reminded me of my own introduction to jewelry… My distaste to jewelry starts with one of those “when I was a little girl” stories. But mine was a bit more like, when I was a little Tom boy… I remember walking into my mother’s bedroom where she was seated behind her ’80s glowing vanity getting glammed up for a party. It was 8:00pm, the party had probably already started, but my mother was still on the putting-on-the-accessories portion of her beauty routine. I came in as she was perusing her congregation of jewels. It could have been costume jewelry, it could have been Elizabeth Taylor-made jewelry, I don’t recall, but what I do remember was what I asked her: “Mom, why is this stuff such a big deal? I mean, why do you ladies even like this stuff so much?”
Stuff. Ha!
And I also remember my mother answering, with a knowing laugh, “just wait until you’re older, you’ll change how you feel about this ‘stuff'”.

Mothers are always right. If there’s anything that makes my eyes bug out, my heart pitter patter and take up drawer after drawer in my closet, it’s my baubles, my costume jewels that I cherish, and my fine jewelry that I collect. They can be the statement pieces of my day, or the demure trinket that I cherish with all my heart, they can be lavish designer pieces that remind me of my husband’s love, or the simple monogrammed necklace that reminds me of my children. Jewelry is more than a means to show off to others; to me, jewelry is more of a sacred personal attachment to a beautiful (and most of the time shiny) object that captures moments in my life. Some folks collect stamps or coins or art throughout history that hang proudly in their homes, but I collect my own history that I hang around my wrist or fingers that brighten up my day, quite literally.

You can imagine my elation when I received an invite for an exclusive look at the Museum of Fine Art’s exhibit, Hollywood Glamour-Fashion and Jewelry from the Silver Screen that opened last year. The exhibit itself was glamour wrapped in gold lamé with a cherry colored diamond on top. My cherry on top was meeting and getting to know the candy man himself, Neil Lane, who was there to show his unbelievable collection of old Hollywood jewelry. Handsome is an understatement, funny, charming, sincere, and one of those people that really engages you with the power of his presence. He told unforgettable stories of each and every one of his jewels, how he acquired them, which old movies they had starred in and what they meant to him. His passion for the stories and for the art of jewelry itself made this man irresistible to listen to — I truly could have talked to him for weeks.

Coincidentally, only two weeks later, my husband and I were flying to Los Angeles for vacation, and after talking with Neil, I had set up a visit to his Beverly Hills shop to see where all the magic happens. This shop is where Neil shows off his collections of everything from mid-century vintage jewels to his masterfully crafted signature pieces to million dollar strands of diamonds and of course the grandiose sparklers that have donned the bodies of some larger than life celebrities.

Neil is, of course, known as the jeweler to the stars having worked with celebrities like Barbra Streisand, Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Yoko Ono, Penelope Cruz, Jennifer Aniston, just to name a few. He is also the unforgettable presence during the final rose and ring ceremony on ABC’s The Bachelor. But what makes him so special is not his attachment to the stars, but the attachment he has to his jewels. His passion for his craft is contagious and talking with him, you can tell that this is what drives him every day and that’s more impressive and powerful than anything Tinseltown can offer.

It was a few weeks later that I finally got to talk with Neil about his life, how he got started and how he came to be the King of Bling. We set up a call while he was starting his sun-filled, palm tree-lined, Pacific ocean laden drive to the Getty Museum. I was on the other line sitting behind my computer in the already iced-over Boston looking out onto bare trees and the 4:00 pm setting sun. If anything could warm me up that day, it would have to be my interview with Neil about jewels, jewels and more jewels!

What’s one of the best guilt trips/stories you’ve ever heard a woman say to get her husband to buy her something?
We have a lot of push presents coming in. I don’t know if it’s guilt or excitement or generosity or appreciation. I once had a “couple” come in (I can’t say the name because it wouldn’t be cool), but here’s a great story. Many years ago, a super famous French director (I won’t say who) was in the shop and was with a very pretty girl and I was in the back, and I hear that they were taking out all these diamond bracelets, and I was getting a little concerned, who are they? When I got out to the front of the shop, this woman had on like seven diamond bracelets, cool ones, vintage ones, a lot of them. She was starring in his movie… and he looked at her and said, “Which one would you like?” And she looked at him, rolled her eyes and said, “All of them.”

She walked out the door with all of them! Lucky gal.

What’s your favorite stone?

Diamonds… Cushion cut diamonds, each one has a personality!

What are the 3 most treasured pieces in your collection?

Treasured, do you mean value wise or emotional-wise? I have emotional-wise and I have financial stretchers. I have this diamond butterfly: When I was still a teenager, I saw one for sale in New York and at the time, I really had no means to buy this. And 25 years later it came up for sale again, and this time I was able to buy it. It’s a treasured piece because it’s almost 100 carats of diamonds.

Because I’m always trying to learn about jewelry historically, I bought a very beautiful carved moonstone in the shape of a cupid and a dove, it was a Chatelaine watch for a lapel. I bid on it and got it. When I realized that I actually won it, I thought, oh my God, what am I going to do with it? I had this trader in my store, I showed him the piece, and I had this intuitive feeling that it might be a Tiffany’s piece, but with no marks on it. The trader said, nah, this could never be a Tiffany’s piece, which got me even more convinced that it was. I took it home that night and examined it, no marks, no nothing. It was before computers, and I was fascinated by it. I called a friend of mine who worked at Tiffany’s and I was talking to her about this lapel watch. She asked what it looked like, and this went on for hours about what it looked like. She then asked, does it look like a globe with a T in it? And I said, maybe? Then my fax machine started going crazy with historical archival documents from the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago where this watch was exhibited, and was made by Tiffany’s specifically for this exhibition. This is how they marked it, with a T and a globe. They didn’t sign Tiffany’s. It was quite valuable. This piece was essentially the foundation of my collection.
My collection isn’t just about paying the money for it, it’s trying to obtain it, losing sleep, being emotionally involved. It’s a cerebral attachment for everything I do.

What’s your favorite flower?

The tulip. I actually grow tulips, I get thousands from Connecticut and then refrigerate them and have this whole process of growing them. And then I draw them. It’s funny that you should ask what my favorite flower is because a lot of my designs for Kay Jewelers are based on the aesthetic of a tulip, the way they flow and how the stem falls.

In 2010, Neil Lane and Kay Jewelers partnered to launch Neil Lane Bridal®, a collection of engagement and wedding rings inspired by the glamour of Hollywood. The Neil Lane Bridal collection is available at Kay Jewelers stores nationwide and online at kay.com.

What is it about Kay Jewelers that made it so enticing to work with them?
I’ve been approached by many different people over the years to work with them, like DeBeers when they first came to America. I actually wanted to bring the glamour of Hollywood and all my aesthetic knowledge to a much larger audience. At my couture level, things are quite costly and I wanted to bring this aesthetic and glamour to Americans. There was nothing better than Kay Jewelers because they were the largest jeweler in America.

The meetings I had with them were like a meeting of the minds. They totally understood my vision of everything I learned from Hollywood and from the Golden Age. We worked together to make it aspirational yet obtainable price wise. It’s quite amazing to be working at the highest level of couture, yet working on such a mass level. Everything I learned from my career, knowing what women want, detail, sparkle, design.

I appreciate that people love it so much. I was buying jeans the other day, and this guy comes up to me and says, “Oh my God! My wife loves you!” He had bought his wife a ring from me from Kay’s.

Do you work out?

Absolutely! I swim, and I workout.  I work out designs in my head. It all unravels when I swim, it puts me in a zen-like state.

What’s the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you in business, love or life?

Do I have a mantra? I’m not sure. Most of my inspiration came from books, my imagination. I didn’t actually have a teacher in the jewelry or design world. I used to walk around as a teen in New York City and look at the shop windows at the jewelry. And I think when I got to go to Europe in my late teens, and I discovered Paris and London and Bond Street. These little jewelry shops, like in the Place Vendôme, those were the big teachers for me. Seeing these things in the windows, but not being able to go in because I was still a student, how involved and emotionally attached I was. And books. Books influenced me. I’m very, very visual.

I read a little bit about the time you spent with your mom. What kind of influence was she for you and your career?
When I was little, I was 6? I don’t remember. My mom and I used to take little walks in the park. She told me years later, that when we got home from these walks, she’d empty out my pockets and would  find all these bits of colored glass that I had picked up along the way. There was a lady that lived in the neighborhood, she used to come to our basement, we had a little arts and crafts table where she told me about plaster of Paris, and I took these little bits of colored glass and made mosaics out of them. So I was always very fascinated by some sort of color, but not necessarily with jewelry at this time, it was more specifically with drawing, with physical and visual arts. When I was little, they used to show these old films on television, and seeing the movie stars, the jewelry glistening… I don’t know if it was the jewelry or the glistening or the glamour. I don’t know, but it captured me.

My mom was very glamorous herself. My parents were a very handsome couple. They used to dance a lot. My father was born in Russia and my mom was born in Manhattan to Russian parents. And my mom used to paint and draw. My father was a businessman but he collected 19th century figurines… it’s something that enamored him. My mom decorated the house with very colorful things. There was definitely an aesthetic. They weren’t necessarily artists, but there was an aesthetic that I think taught me that things have value as an antique.

When I came to California, that’s when it hit me; the combination of the jewelry, glamour, the glitter, the movement. I really developed my style here in Los Angeles, with actual celebrities and movie stars of the contemporary world. Going back and forth from the old world to the contemporary world was quite amazing and the fact that I still do that is even more amazing. When people ask me what my style is, well, I think my style is just, glamour. I think about glamour all the time. I think about that feeling it evokes when women put on their engagement rings.  I try to make rings with all the angles and sparkle with diamond details, so they can always see, even when they’re sitting at their desk, and everyone else can see all the little details that they can’t. They want to feel the glamour, they want to feel like they’re the stars.

Speaking of stars, do you have any interesting/gossipy stories about celebrities that we might know?

I have this great, funny story. There was this celebrity, really gorgeous, and she seemed to have been dating a lot of guys. And whenever she got a new boyfriend, she used to send them along to me. And then she would call up and tell me the things she liked and then she would tell me to meet at this hotel and drop them off. We did this a lot. And it was so much fun with her! And she just wanted all her boyfriends to buy her jewelry, she just loved jewelry!
I guess it would be more funny if I knew who it was. She went under different aliases. Her name was always different, it was always flower names; one time it would be Rose, another time it was Lily, then it was Dahlia. They were always flowers. Most of the time I’d be dropping off the jewelry at the Beverly Hills Hotel. I was told to leave the jewelry in one room and then I would leave. This was some time ago…

Who was your first celebrity encounter?

Goldie Hawn was one of my first clients. They weren’t the same type of celebrity as they are today, young starlets. This was almost 25 years ago, they were more established stars like Barbra Streisand. I was making jewelry that they were wearing on the red carpets in the ’90s, friends of producers, I was the guy to go to for engagement rings, it was quite amazing!

As I hear Neil’s car engine turn off, I realize that he’d finally arrived at the Getty and had to run to meet his friend. You know those long conversations you have with friends or with incredibly interesting people that have a way of transporting you into their minds, well this is how it was with Neil. I almost felt like I was sitting there next to him in his car weaving down the PCH listening to his stories and honestly, I wish the ride was further than just Malibu.

I can’t thank Neil and his incredible team enough for sharing so many private details about his beautiful collection, his life and his passion for what to some are just shiny objects but to Neil, his life’s work and his true love.

New Ms Fit Feature: DANIELA CORTE

We have been wanting to do this feature on the talented, stylish and gorgeous, Daniela Corte for almost as long as MsFit has been around. We are so thrilled that day has come, especially now that DC is including fitness pieces in her expansive collection. You know we love everything and anything that ties fashion and fitness together, and Daniela is a MsFit through and through!

We had a MsFit “dress-up” day at DC Studio last week and jaws dropped, eyes bugging out, loved seeing the collection made of brightly colored maxi dresses, painted print skirt and top separates and even bathing suits, just to name a few… and you may even recognize some of her pieces which were recently featured in Sports Illustrated and modeled by Gigi Hadad! Her pieces are unique, beautiful, and made with such great fabrics and cuts, she has an item for every occasion! We both were wowed by how her collections included so many different types of pieces that truly anyone can wear at any time and at any age. Not only is Daniela a fashion expert, she is so warm and kind, has such contagious energy, and just so fun to be around. She even managed to make trying on bikinis a lot of fun! We obviously wanted to take the whole collection (and Daniela) home with us but we chose a few beautiful gems that we can’t wait to rock this summer!

We can’t wait to see what she’ll create next. Thank you Daniella so much for sharing with us!

WHAT IS KEEPING YOU BUSY THESE DAYS?

Life!!! Everything!!! My kids definitely keep me on my toes. But my husband, my family and my friends are also a huge priority! And every other free minute is spent on my business! The second I finish designing one collection, it’s time for the next one, but I love it!!! Play hard, work hard 🙂

WHAT ARE YOU LOVING IN FITNESS AND FASHION RIGHT NOW?

Fitness is my therapy. I love my trainer and friend Ildiko Varhelyi, she comes to my house and is the best way to jump start the morning as well as running on the Esplanande at the crack of dawn with my best friend! My latest fitness addiction is Anna Kaiser! She makes me want to dance! I just tried her treadmill workout. That was different and fun.

Fashion is my passion. Even though, I, along with the whole city of Boston waited so long for summer, I’m now laser focused on fall and for the launch of my new fall collection. I’ll be pleasantly distracted from all these fall thoughts by my swim photoshoot in the next week.

HOW DID YOU START DANIELA CORTE DESIGNS? WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PIECE FOR SUMMER?

Gosh, it’s a long story!! I started in 2000, in a tiny upper flow studio far down Newbury Street. At that time, it was all custom clothing made right there in the store. As time went on, we kept moving to bigger and bigger studios, growing the business one season at a time. Now we have a floor at 211 Newbury Street and although we still make some of the clothes in our Newbury Street operation, most of our production is manufactured in NY, LA, and Argentina. And although we still do some custom work for our VIP customers, the business is mostly our ready-to-wear clothes, and most of the sales are done by various small boutiques all over the globe.

My favorite summer pieces are my jumpsuit, maxi dresses and silk and cotton scarves.

New Ms Fit Feature on the Booty-Beautiful, Kelly Brabants:

Kelly Brabants, fitness instructor and founder of the Boston based fitness and fashion brand, Booty By Brabants

Kelly Brabants, fitness instructor and founder of the Boston based fitness and fashion brand, Booty By Brabants.

Ms Fit for Society loves everything Fitness and Fashion, so when we heard about Kelly Brabants, we had to learn more! Kelly just embodies Fit-Fashion (literally). We love the fit-lifestyle brand she is creating and her glowy- healthy energy. Thank you so much for sharing with us Kelly!

WHAT IS KEEPING YOU BUSY THESE DAYS?

Busy would be an understatement when it comes to my life right now,  but I could not be happier! I am now working for my business full time as well as teaching my “Booty By Brabants” classes & boxing classes at BFX Back Bay, Equinox Franklin St, and The Club by George Foreman III. I am teaching 14-15 classes a week right now and I LOVE it! I am so grateful to be able to work at 3 of the most amazing fitness studios in the city! My classes are my passion, teaching and motivating others is what I love most about my job! When I’m not teaching I spend my time working on growing my business & my brand, whether it be through social media, trunk shows, fitness events, meetings, I am taking every opportunity I can to learn and grow as a business owner and fitness professional. I am very lucky to have my family working with me to keep the business running. my dad and my brother do all of the shipping and handling, and my mom is in charge of the inventory. The whole Brabants clan is involved and on board with the booty business!

WHAT ARE YOU LOVING IN FITNESS AND FASHION RIGHT NOW?

Right now I am loving the new BFX studio in Back Bay. I love the facility and the classes are killer! I also LOVE boxing, I try and take at least 2 boxing classes a week. Boxing is definitely a great stress reliever for me. Fashion wise, I love my Booty By Brabants apparel, of course. My go-to- outfit is usually a bright colored BBB legging, my  BBB sports bra and a tied up oversized tank. I’m also a huge sneaker junkie, I can never have enough Nikes! How I dress directly effects how I feel, so it’s super important for me to always look cute at the gym (hence why I started my BBB Workout line).

TELL US  ABOUT HOW YOU STARTED YOUR COMPANY AND A LITTLE MORE ABOUT YOUR PRODUCTS?

I started my business with the intention of it just being a workout. When I decided to start my own brand, I had been personal training at Equinox on Franklin Street for 2.5 years. I also have 15 years of dance experience. I wanted to create and teach my own class that was 100% designed by me. When creating my brand, I was inspired by the Brazilian booty (my mom is from Rio de Janeiro), and I love the Brazilian culture! I designed a 60-minute high intensity booty-shaping workout with unique moves derived from my dance and fitness background. I wanted this class to be fun and innovative, and really give women real results! The class started growing rapidly.  I was constantly getting asked about my clothes/style– it took a couple of months before I realized the huge demand for fun and sexy fitness apparel in Boston. So I reached out to a designer and manufacturer in Brazil to see if they wanted to partner with me. In December 2014, I launched my legging line known on social media as #BBBleggings.

While my leggings are without a doubt flattering, the Booty by Brabants brand is still based off of working out, and keeps exercise in the forefront of all things. To get the booty you desire, you need to work out and put the time and effort in. In return, these leggings will showcase your hard work. When I teach classes now about 80% of the girls are wearing BBBleggings, I still can’t believe it sometimes! (side note/this happens all the time: I was in whole foods the other day and two girls were wearing my leggings and I almost stopped to take a picture, but then my boyfriend called me a creep so I walked away. I swear it will never get old!!!! (Hahaha)
