Jessica’s Studio Style & Music for Barre and Boxing:

No matter where I’m going to workout, I’m somehow always layered. I love layering! I always have an easy-to-throw-on sweatshirt or tee over a workout tank, even in the summer. I also love layering because I usually have somewhere to be right after class and this allows for quick transitions between workout to day or evening wear.

Here is what I am wearing and listening to right now during my two favorite workouts:

TO THE BARRE:

1. The Modern Classic from Gwenyth~ I have one in every color! It is the perfect top to wear to Barre and really everywhere. I love the ballet style and adjustable fit. I love how I can tie the sides up while I am teaching and then pull the sides down post class and pair with a sweater or cardigan to meet friends for coffee or run errands. It’s effortless!

2. Firedaughter Clothing’s off-the-shoulder Big Huge Heart Sweatshirt~ Anything off-the-shoulder is my favorite and Firedaughter has definitely perfected the off-the-shoulder look.  I have a collection of these types of inspirational tees and sweatshirts… and this is the perfect layer!

3. The perfect leggings~ For Barre, I’m usually wearing either the Splits Tendu grip tights or the Nova Capri legging from Splits59. I love the Tendu grip tights because of the grips on the bottom of the feet that work perfectly for helping hold that stretch at the Barre which means you don’t have to wear Barre socks. I also love the Nova Capri because they have the best fit of any legging I own.

4. Nike Wedge sneakers~ I am so thankful for the wedge sneaker! I am obsessed! It is the perfect fit-fashion invention. Throw these on with your workout outfit and immediately you can carry your workout look through the rest of the day. I always feel like I look better with a little height and they’re perfect to wear to a Barre workout because you actually do the workout in socks or barefoot.

5. Take your Barre look to dinner with Daniela Corte’s off the shoulder Ballet Top. As I said, I love everything off the shoulder. I just bought this top. I can throw it on with my workout leggings and I’m all ready for post Barre class fun.

TO KICKBOXING:

1. My prize possession. These were a limited edition item from Alexander Wang‘s Objects collection two years ago. They are 12 ounces of pure leather perfection!

2. The “Edgy” Legging~ I love these Daniela Corte Tracy Capri leggings in Python. They are the perfect legging for looking cool while you’re kicking butt.

3. The Ashby Tank and Loren Bra~ If you know me, you know there is a 75% chance I’m wearing at least one item that’s Splits59 at all times. And for kickboxing, it’s often the Ashby tank. It fits perfectly and I find that in workouts where I am sweating more like boxing or spin, the Ashby doesn’t get uncomfortable.

4. Crane & Lion’s long sleeve tee. I love the fit of this and the tee has great ruching in the back for an even slimmer fit.

5. Divert Jacket by Koral Activewear~ Perfect to complete the look and easy to throw on over everything.

6. Liteweight sneakers~ For kickboxing, I like a very lightweight sneaker such as these Nike Free TR Breathe.

MUSIC:

Nothing motivates me like great music. Here’s my latest playlist for music I’m playing in my Barre classes and listening to while I workout on Spotify.

New Ms Fit Feature: Jessica Hennessy

Jessica Hennessy, Owner if Mercury Moving and Storage and blogger of The Haute Mamas

Jessica Hennessy, Owner of Mercury Moving and Storage and blogger of The Haute Mamas .

WHAT IS KEEPING YOU BUSY THESE DAYS?

I have so much keeping me busy, I don’t know where to start! I guess it makes sense to start with the priority, which are my two exuberant little boys. At 3 and 5-years-old, they are basically like to superballs- once they get going they are hard to catch!

I own a moving and storage company, founded by cherished late husband, Garry Hennessy. Everyone at Mercury Moving is gearing up for the moving season. That will undoubtedly keep us very busy with challenging tasks and late nights. Luckily, I am surrounded by an amazing staff who helped to carry Mercury through Garry’s illness. They are the reason why we have such a great reputation. I am forever grateful for their loyalty, hard-work, and of course great sense of humor. (The latter makes everything a little easier. J)

If two active boys and managing a business weren’t enough, I’ve recently taken on a partnership as co-blogger with Kim Gioioso of The Haute Mamas. In just three short months, it has been a therapeutic and amazing experience. I love to write and am a creative person. I also strongly believe in personal hobbies, as an outlet for stress. Writing for such a fun blog has filled these needs. I am looking forward to a long partnership and sharing stories and learning more about myself along the way.

WHAT ARE YOU LOVING IN FITNESS AND FASHION RIGHT NOW?

For me, exercise equals sanity. I used to be a 30 to 40 mile per week runner, but it’s been hard to find the time over the past few years. With the sun hanging around later in the day and warmer weather starting to blow in our direction, I am promising myself to make the time. There’s no better way to clear my head and work through problems than a long run. Besides running, Soul Cycle has helped me burn some calories and do some soul searching. I’ve never taken a more emotional exercise class! They weren’t kidding when they picked the company name!

Fashion? Oh my goodness! I love everything. My fashion sense has always morphed from one day to the next, depending on my mood. As a young girl, I quickly discovered fashion was a fantastic mode for creative expression. And so, as an adult, nothings changed. If I’m feeling frisky, I may wear leather leggings. If I am feeling all business, then clean lines and a neat heel do the trick. As far as trends, despite our all white winter, I am digging the white on white trend. I think white should be a leading color choice anytime the weather starts to cook. I am also obsessed with Valentino’s Rockstud line; I want them all! I better start booking some mega moves if I want to entertain that obsession!

HOW CAN WE KEEP IN TOUCH WITH YOU?

I’m pretty new to Instagram, and I have to say I am fascinated. It’s like a strategy game; picking out the right hashtags to attract the right audience.

New Ms Fit Feature: Kaity Cimo of Boston’s Newest Fitness and Fashion Brand

Kaity Cimo. Marketing Director of Crane & Lion

Kaity Cimo. Marketing Director of Crane & Lion

What is keeping you busy these days?

Since I work for a company, Crane &  Lion,  dedicated to fitness, I’m sure this is where I’m supposed to write I spend most of my time at the gym or studios.  In all honestly though most of my time – and sweat – has gone into the recent launch of Crane & Lion.  I wouldn’t have it any other way.  I love being a part of a fashion start-up and engulfing myself in the entrepreneurial atmosphere.  When I can catch a break from our business, (and after spending QT with my husband and my four-legged furry child) that is when you can find me in the studio!

What are you loving in Fitness and Fashion right now?

I love the continued fusion of fitness wear with fashion.  “Athleisure” is the new buzzword for this style and is becoming a category of it’s own on the runway.  Some outfit examples are a form-fitting workout tank tucked into high-waisted pants or pairing an sport dress with a cropped blazer.  The trend is ideal for us active women who want our clothing to be versatile throughout the whole day.  It allows us to embrace a lifestyle of activity and wellness – all while exuding a great sense of style. In 2015 I am looking forward to seeing more women wearing a variety of pant silhouettes such as wide leg and cuffed joggers.

Can you tell us a little bit more about Crane & Lion?

racerback_black

Crane & Lion is a fitness and fashion brand that launched this past November in Boston.  We wanted to design a chic, versatile collection that pulls inspiration and structure from both the fashion and athletic worlds.  We offer a clean, streamlined look through a subtle, on-trend color palette, flattering style lines and thoughtful details.  Our pieces can be seamless additions to every woman’s closet as well as transition from the early morning workout to dinner with friends.  We want to inspire women to look good and feel good all while being comfortable with whom they are.

Beyond our core business we have a giving back program called Connect & Contribute.  At the end of each year, 5% of our revenue will be divided among three amazing organizations that dedicate themselves to the health, wellness and happiness of others: the one hundred for MGH Cancer Center, Wide Horizons for Children and Big Sisters Association of Greater Boston.  We will also be working side by side with these organizations, helping to raise awareness through events, social media and word of mouth.

A Look Back…and a Big and Bright Look Forward

Before the New Years ball dropped, we were reminiscing about 2014 in our usual format: early morning coffee shop, half listening to one and other, half keeping our kids from causing massive destruction, all while taking “notes” on coffee stained napkins. We decided to take a look back at our very first MsFit post “Freshly Hatched,” (see below). What we loved so much about it is everything we wanted to happen with Ms Fit For Society in 2014… actually did happen! Especially Alisa rocking some short shorts.. whoohooo!!

Who wears short shorts? Me! Finally!

Who wears short shorts? Me! Finally!

I think one of the things we are most proud of is the success of our two big Ms Fit Events in 2014. Our two events raised over $50,000 in sales with a nice portion of that going to the American Heart and American Stroke Association!

Ms Fit has become something much bigger than we ever thought it would be when we sat down to write our very first post. A big part of our success is due to all of you, your encouragement, your sharing with us, your helping us inspire through your features and support and suggestions! Our sincerest thank you! Another piece of this, when we started a year ago, the bond between fitness and fashion was just catching on… now the two are inseparable, just look through the pages of any fashion magazine.

We are filled with excitement and anticipation for what 2015 will bring, whom we will get to feature, and how many new amazing Ms Fits we will meet. We have some big plans and we are going to be working our butts off to see 2015 be even bigger and brighter!

Read our “Freshly Hatched” article below…

Here’s to a fit and extremely fabulous 2015!

FRESHLY HATCHED      Posted March, 2014

So now that I have your undivided attention, I wanted to announce some breaking news to you guys. I am super excited about the new addition to my life, it’s still early on, but I just couldn’t wait to tell everyone that I am…. launching a new venture in fashion!!! Oh, did you think it was something else? I’m still trying to get my pre-preggo body back… that is definitely not in the cards for me right now.

Which brings me to this venture… Before I had LL, I had no clue, not even a fascination of how hard it is to bounce back, drop all the baby weight and feel 100% normal (body wise… brain wise, I’m still working on it). I think it took me about 14 months to get back to my exact weight before getting pregnant which is understandable, but much too long for me. It was too long to wait to fit into all of my skin tight dresses, it took too long to see my cellulite disappear for my short shorts and silk pants, too long to tone up my legs and ass to even fathom sporting a bikini, never mind my poor 5 inch heels that suffered the brunt of it supporting my overweight ass. You get the [overweight] picture.

This time around, I’m not messing around, especially with spring right around the corner. One of my favorite days of the year is when I spend hours taking out all of my spring and summer clothing out of storage (which I conveniently and cruelly labeled “skinny bitch clothes”), and I just know that I won’t be able to mentally handle not fitting into everything again.

Luckily, I have my best friend, my partner in crime and my greatest motivator in my arsenal this time around. I bestow an enormous token of gratitude to the ex-196-pounder Jessica Diaz, into kicking my ass into full gear and helping me to drop almost all of my baby #2 weight. As a professional barre instructor, she challenged me to take one of her barre classes and I was immediately obsessed. If you’ve never done barre, you should. That’s all I have to say. Combine ballet + pilates + embarrassing leg shaking + can’t move the next 3 days, that = how you get your body back.

And now you ask about this new venture that I was so excited to tell you about… Jessica and I always talk about the affects of how both of our professions profoundly increase our clients’ self confidence, sex appeal and energy level, not to mention how it opens their eyes to new possibilities in fashion trends and risk taking. Putting the obvious aside, we thought about how amazingly well fitness and fashion go together, and more so than anyone really likes to talk about. Our new baby is this venture together; bringing our clients, readers, mamas, instagram and Facebook followers all of the greatest and newest in what fitness and fashion have to challenge us with every season.

My short shorts have nothing on me this year because I’ve been doing my barre squats, along with my seat work. I’ve resurrected my crop tops and stocked up on some new ones (can you have too many?) because I’ve been doing my core work and planks (cheated a few times, for sure), and I have confidence that my booty will be as close to bootilicious as the had-two-babies excuse can allow by summer because I’ve been painstakingly doing my legs lifts with a ball, with a strap, with weights and with every last ounce of energy I have!

We’ve starting slowly, as every new project does, but hope that you guys love what we have to say and share and hopefully together we can change and inspire even more mamas out there that think that their temple of a body went out with the bag full of dirty diapers.

Birth Announcement:

Ms. Fit for Society

Born: 2014 Weight: touchy subject Height: the top of the world

Both mamas and baby are healthy and doing just great!

Whether you’re a new mama or someone craving a boost of motivation for the new year, we really hope that we can inspire you with not just how you see yourself on the outside, but more importantly how you feel on the inside. For some it’s bouncing back after baby, or motivation to run a marathon, maybe even take on that career they’ve always wanted, or travel to a far off land, perhaps it’s writing a book or getting back in the dating scene and finding their one true love. Whatever it may be, to each his own, leave all judgements on the table and just go out and do it… and maybe we’ll even be lucky enough to hear about it from you!

Love,

Ms Fit For Society

What is keeping you busy these days?

Winter is the busiest time of the year for a Meteorologist (especially in New England) so my work keeps me busy. Broadcasting for New England Cable News, I forecast for six states… so even if it is quiet in Boston, it is snowing somewhere in New England!

I’m very excited about 2015 because I’ve been asked to do some weather reporting for our sister station-Telemundo -here in Boston. I’ll be able to forecast all types of weather for New Englanders now in English AND Spanish!

I hope 2015 brings you lots of sunshine, or whatever weather makes you happy….for now get ready for a quick storm this Saturday night into Sunday that could bring us a wintry mix & some rain…oh yeah & watch NECN.

What are you loving in fitness and fashion right now?

My new health obsession is “Juicing”. My family got me a NutriBullet for Christmas and I just about throw anything I can get my hands on in there…Every morning I make a new concoction with different fruits & vegetables and it actually tastes good! I’m also trying to be better with my workouts. HD Television can be very unforgiving & it really adds ten pounds, so I try to stay active as much as I can. My favorite fashion APP on my IPhone is called “Wardrobe Journal” . Every day I log what I wore, with the name, description and picture. The App let me know how long it has been since I wore each outfit so I don’t repeat it too often. I usually don’t wear the same thing for about 2 months ( I have a few favorites that I rotate in a few more times).

What is keeping you busy these days?

Recently I am extremely busy launching the Maven Campaign for Dunwello.com. I was brought into Dunwello on the heels of the tech startup getting funding from Twitter execs as announced in Bostinno.com.

A little background about Dunwello: Dunwello is a young, hip tech startup with powerhouse “it boys” Matt squared (Lauzon and Brand) at the helm. I was beyond thrilled to come on board with Dunwello, and revved up to spearhead the Maven Campaign. After having partnered up for several Mike&Ton fashion shows with Gemvara (the online jewelry company started by Lauzon in his dormroom at Babson), I knew Matt Lauzon was someone to keep my eye on. The idea of individuals being able to brand and market themselves online is a natural progression from Yelp and Angie’s list, and Dunwello has the slick, easy way for pros to accomplish this, with none of the hassle or negative energy. When you go to some of the current reviewer sites, you are looking at businesses, not individuals, but the real information you are digging for is the name of the actual pros. Matt and Matt came up with the idea to quantify this on a user friendly platform where SEO for Dunwello profiles is easily bumped up. When Lauzon asked me to join the team, it was a no brainer–I was honored to be a part of this ground breaking company. I’m very thrilled about my role as Principal Brand Ambassador, because I get to hang out with my friends and tell them about the cool things we are doing at Dunwello. I am in charge of making sure we have highly respected Bostonians contributing reviews of the best professionals in Boston—aka The Maven Campaign. When asked to explain what a Maven is, you could best describe it as the same as the “verified check mark” prominent individuals get with Twitter. Becoming Maven #1 was supremely cool for me. I am looking forward to adding a top roster of Mavens to join me in helping promote and give a shout out to their “team” of pros who make life easier and better for them. I personally always want to tell people about how great my hairdresser, Violet Furxhi is. Or how Tavi Delarosa or Nelse Kairini  create beautiful makeup on me or my models for mike&ton. So naturally it is a great feeling to be able to help local individuals brand and market themselves. Most individuals don’t have the time or budget to hire or do their own PR. This functions as a way of getting the word out about what you do best.

What are you loving in fitness and fashion right now?

I’m loving Flywheel. It is quick and a great workout. In 45 minutes I can burn 400 calories. I know it’s only one cookie, but the amount of sweating you are doing, you really feel great when you leave the studio.

For fashion, I am digging digging in my own closet! I have found that re-purposing different outfits in different ways has been very satisfying, and my wallet also appreciates it! For example, I have been “all seasoning” some of my dresses. Adding leather leggings under a spring or fall dress, instantly turns it into a winter safe outfit. It also makes them a bit more edgy, and I finish the look by pulling the leggings over my pumps. I also love little socks with pumps. It’s another way of carrying shoes that wouldn’t necessarily be worn in the winter into winter. I found these cute foot panties at Daniela Corte Boutique, and have gotten many compliments on them. I also like little fishnet ankle socks from American Apparel. I can wear them with pumps and it gives the pumps a “bootie” look.

Tonya's ankle socks paired with pumps to create “faux booties”. Also pictured, my business partner, Michael DePaulo. This was shot for a photo spread in the Herald debuting the mike&ton partnership with Rumba at The Intercontinental Hotel. Under the mike&ton label, we designed the uniforms of the servers and bartenders.

We asked Tonya to share how she got started in the world of fashion:

I have always had a love for fashion. Even at a young age, to my mother’s chagrin, I remember insisting on wearing a certain pink dress every single day. I think my daughter has a little of that in her. At 2.5 she’s already insisting on choosing an outfit on her own every morning, even if that means wearing Toms shoes in the dead of winter.

Toms

My fashion profile grew shortly after Ben and I were married. I got named one of Boston Globe’s Top 25 Most Stylish People by Carol Beggy. I think I was actually #4 right after Tom Brady. It was from this moment on, that my love for fashion really began to blossom and turn into something entirely cool, on it’s own path. I could no longer leave the house looking like a slob, wearing lululemon sweats and not brushing my hair. (which in my husband’s opinion, was not such a bad thing—I think he was growing tired of my “comfy attire.”)

It was about this time that I met my close friend, Michael DePaulo. He was, at the time, designing couture gowns and wanted to get further exposure for them. We were introduced by a mutual friend, and hit it off immediately. I wore his creations to the Sony Columbia Pictures “21” red carpet premiere, and began to regularly wear his fashions to many of the national and local events we attended

Soon thereafter, we decided to open mike&ton. We started with a full collection which consisted of dresses, skirts, tops, jackets and pants. Into our fourth collection, we decided to pare down to our signature pencil skirt—The Travel Skirt—so named because it is made with a luggage zipper and is perfect for the jetsetting mike&ton woman.

Along my path, I helped launch the TV show StyleBoston, a half hour lifestyle TV show. I served as host of the show and developed and produced my own segment titled Fashion Forward.

Shortly thereafter I was tapped by NECN’s The Morning Show to produce and star in my own TV segment, Tagged By Tonya, a weekly style and fashion segment that educated New England viewers on anything from how to tie a summer scarf to what were the most effective and fashionable winter parkas for the slopes. I now remain the go-to Fashion Expert for NECN.

Recently I have returned to StyleBoston and have taken on the role of Principal Fashion Expert and Style Correspondent. With my fashion expertise and contact with the fashion community it was a natural role for me to fill. I am looking forward to covering events, giving backstage peeks at fashion shows, and teaching my audience about anything and everything in the fashion/style arena as I myself learn more and more about the ever evolving world of fashion.

What is keeping you busy these days?

In addition to raising my two daughters (one 2 yrs old and the other, 4 months old), I have been really busy with the launch of http://www.bacoluxury.com – an online magazine that is dedicated to fashion’s artisans, small businesses and emerging designers, which launched today, December 17th! While I was pregnant with my daughter Vittoria, I was busier than ever with fashion shows and presentations. I was so tired, but it was a great moment in my career. After I gave birth to Vittoria, I was overwhelmed with having two small children, and in the midst of all the domestic mania, the idea to start BACO just hit me.I like to think Vittoria inspired me!

What are you loving in fitness and fashion right now?

I love the capsule collections and collaborations between fashion and athletic wear companies, like Adidas Originals with Italia Independent. I think it is an exciting moment for fitness wear companies. E-commerce companies like Net-a-Porter are really shining a spotlight on sports wear and dance wear. Designers are really focusing on catering to women with hectic schedules and are making more looks that work for many facets of a busy woman’s lifestyle – the barre, leisure and evening.

We just love the imprint Sofia is making in the fashion world and think you will too! With today being the official launch date of BACO, read more about it here:

How did you get started in fashion? While I was at USC in Los Angeles, I was an intern at Footwear News in Los Angeles. After graduation in 2001, I went to Milan for an internship with Women’s Wear Daily, and after assisting on a front page cover photo shoot and attending my first fashion show, I was completely hooked. In 2007, I was hired by Dow Jones and Wall Street Journal to cover the Italian luxury and retail beat. In 2011, I left because I really wanted to write more about style, rather than the financial side of fashion. I think BACO really combines both business and style. It’s the perfect mix for me.

Tell us more about BACO and how it was born…  I have covered fashion and the Italian luxury sector for nearly a decade. The best part of my job is working on the profiles and feature pieces on the many artisans and family businesses that represent the backbone of Italy’s fashion industry. After the financial crisis, I wrote a lot about these small brands and their struggle to survive in a competitive, globalized market. The crisis really made consumers contemplate their purchases and demand more of an explanation as to where these products are made and who is making them.

It soon became evident that high-end luxury consumers are tired of the same old big brands and are really yearning for products that are even more exclusive, handmade and personalized. One day it hit me that there was really no coverage of micro yet super exclusive luxury brands. I truly think that a site like BACO represents the future of the fashion industry. It’s not just a blog. It really provides an education and an in-depth background of the brands we cover. We aren’t against the Guccis or Ferragamos out there — we are actually looking for the next Guccio Gucci and the next Salvatore Ferragamo.

BACO suppports young designers, craftsmen and family-run companies that represent the best hidden secrets of the industry. There is so much left to discover!

Not only because for a workout line, their clothes have such awesome style, but also because the company is made up of such a wonderful group of people.   Splits59 is always inspiring us to be healthier and “cooler”.  I wear a ton from them, so it’s hard to pick my favorites. But, these capri pants are what I’m really loving right now (use my name jessicadiaz at chekcout for 15% off your purchases at Splits59).

One of the things we love most about Ms Fit For Society are the amazing  people we meet along our fashion and fitness travels. So we were thrilled when Carina approached Ms Fit For Society about co-hosting a unique fashion and fitness event at Intermix earlier this fall. Not only was the event a ton of fun but also a total success, and to top it all off, we had the pleasure of getting to know Carina a little bit more. Putting on an event is no easy task; the planning, the phone calls, the meetings, the endless lists… what I think made it such a success was the excitement and energy that surrounded it from the start. Carina’s fun spirit and enthusiasm really set the mood for our Fit-Fashion night. Everyone was laughing, having fun and doing a whole lot of shopping at Intermix. We were just so impressed by Carina’s work ethic and truly just how straight-up cool she is. Personally knowing her passion for what she does and how hard she works makes us even more excited to share more about her company, The Third Piece.

Carina~

The Third Piece company started in the summer of 2012 with my girlfriend Kristen. We actually met at a bootcamp called “Drop 10” and became friends while we bitched about how much we hated mountain climbers.

Kristen, who has a background in finance always talked about wanting to start her own business. That summer I started knitting more and pitched to her an idea, which evolved with her collaboration with the Third Piece.
We are a hand-knit made in America company whose mission is to create jobs, and to make knitting sexy! We not only sell our ready made pieces, we also sell our Funky Chunky Merino wool, which is used to knit each one of our pieces. Funky Chunky is created by the Third Piece and available for sale on our website. After the new year we will be doing a soft launch of our knit kits; now your new creative outlet!”~Carina.
To our MsFit’s in NYC – The Third Piece will be at Bergdorf Goodmans this Friday 11/21 and at the American Field Pop-up Market and Exhibition November 22nd-23rd, 274 36th street, Brooklyn, NY.
Check out some of The Third Piece’s must-have hand knit pieces that we just adore!:

This is How We Roll….Out Pain.

I posted a quick picture about the book Melt Method, by Sue Hitzmann a few months ago but now feel that it is in need of a real blog post to do it justice.  Melt stands for Myofascial Energetic Length Technique. I never thought I would actually stay focused for 293 pages of a book just dedicated to a foam roller, but I sure did! And happily. I actually found this book fascinating and also truly helpful in reducing pain (and in some areas) actually resolved pain. For example,  if you are someone with shin splints.. WOW, give it a try on your shins.

The MELT Method by Sue Hitzmann

The Melt Method by Sue Hitzmann

I first started noticing people using foam rollers (as a real thing) a few years ago. I thought they looked a little weird, lying there on a mat, in an odd position and just rolling on the ground. Today, it’s my obsession and no matter how odd I look, I am rolling!

After seeing people in and around the gym, I figured I give it a try. I grabbed a roller. Luckily a nice person in the gym warned me that I had grabbed the “advanced” foam roller and that if I had never tried it before, I should go with the blue softer one. Who knew?! Yes, there are different levels of foam rolling. I do recommend starting with a softer foam roller before moving on to the harder, more advanced foam roller :).

I started to roll. My own version of it. I liked it. It felt like a nice little massage. I was doing it “wrong” and for only about 3 minutes, so pretty much decided it wasn’t for me.

A year ago, I suffered a back injury. I initially thought it was an issue with my hip. But after a lot of pain and about 6 weeks of misdiagnosis, I was told I had a herniated disk, my L1 S3. It wasn’t fun.  I immediately started physical therapy  twice a week and that started to help relieve the pain. I had announced in my Barre classes that I could “teach” but had to take a break from demonstrating for a few weeks to let my back heal.  One of my barre students came to me after that class and suggested that I should try foam rolling. She highly suggested I read the book MELT before I start to really learn about the benefits of rolling, get directions on how to roll, and more interestingly, to discover how the book describes your fascia (the connective tissue that is everywhere in your body) as its own “body system.”

The book does get a little scientific and medical, though easy to follow. I got sucked into learning more and more about relieving pain, re-hydrating my muscles, rebalancing my nervous system and body, reducing inflammation, improving flexibility, resolving pain, the list goes on and on.. all the way to reducing cellulite. Oh yes, foam rolling has been said to reduce the appearance of cellulite by rehydrating the connective tissues in the back of the legs.

I am in no way connected to this book, or any foam rollers. I just have felt the improvement in the reduction of pain in my hips and lower back from being consistent about foam rolling. I also for the first time in years, felt a big reduction in pain in my shins (having had shin splints forever).   I also feel that foam rolling is that extra step in keeping the youthfulness of your body and muscles by keeping them hydrated and balanced. So if you haven’t given it a try, TRY IT!
