What is the Ideal Exercise?

I get asked this question all of the time…

My answer is, “barre, obviously…” No, but in all seriousness, I do feel that the type of barre classes I teach do come pretty close to hitting the three key components of fitness that I believe are necessary to being fit and healthy. The goal is also to keep people healthy in order to complete every day activities: Cardiovascular health, resistance training and flexibility.
How you combine these three components may vary depending on your health and fitness goals, the time you have, and the intensity at which you workout. So after being asked this question “what is the best workout,” I decided to do more research to support my answer that barre comes pretty close.
We all are always looking to find the “perfect workout” that helps us reach our goals as fast as possible. It is important in this quest that we think about how we can be exercising as “smartly” and effectively as possible, as well as staying in that balance between over-exercising and what is good for our bodies. For example, for runners, a recent finding published in an article in the Journal of Physiology showed that just three 30 minute sessions of SIT (spring interval training) were as effective as five hours worth of steady-state exercise. That is a huge time saver! However, the study also shows that doing too much SIT and too intensely, becoming over demanding on your body, can actually slow your progress. So finding the balance is key, and determining that balance can take some time – which requires the ability to pay attention to your body. My gauge for myself, is post workout. I want to feel challenged, but still energized and not depleted, and eventually want to see results (sooner rather than later). If you have a workout that you love, but seems to wipe you out, look for ways to cut down the intensity and duration, or reduce the number of times per week you do it.

Now getting back to the barre and why it’s a great full body workout that checks off my three boxes: Cardiovascular workouts, resistance and strength training, as well as flexibility. It is the combination of these focus areas that really make barre so effective and why so many of my students have seen such big transformations.
Cardio: Cardiovascular fitness is really defined as any activity that increases your heart rate. Do you get in a cardio workout in class? Yes! Think thigh work. Bring your mind to the end of the third set and you will know, oh yes, my heart has been pumping. The intensity at which you complete this is very individual (another thing to love about barre). If you are pushing yourself harder each class, you are going to feel that increase in heart rate. We are also bringing our heart rate up during our warms-ups, planks, push-ups, seat work and back dancing. And, as a Spokersperson for the American Stroke Association, I am also a huge fan of getting the heart pumping because it helps keep your heart healthy and reduces your risk of developing certain types of cardiovascular diseases.
Strength and Resistance Training: Big yes! If you have taken my class you know it doesn’t take a lot of heavy weights to really work and sculpt your arm muscles. Think of how heavy 2 or 3 pound weights start to feel after 3-5 minutes of targeted arm work. Or our tricep-dips that never seem to get easier and effectively tone the back of the arms. I use resistance bands and ones own body weight throughout my classes to add in strength and resistance training. The barre has long been known for improving muscle tone and increasing lean muscles. Lean muscle helps keep our metabolism going strong. Individuals with more lean muscles have a higher resting metabolic rate, meaning you burn more calories. And that’s always a great thing!
Flexibility: There is a lot of stretching in my barre classes. Stretching not only feels good but also is important for reducing risk of injury, for joint health and to maintain the ability to move through your joints’ full range of motion. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, flexibility is critical for improving overall performance and reducing your risk of injury while doing any activity, from strenuous (lifting a heavy box), to the mundane (bending down to tie your shoe). I also think stretching and maintaining your body’s flexibility keeps you feeling and looking youthful.
According to the American Council on Exercise, staying limber alleviates stress, improves your coordination and balance, and can protect you from postural issues, particularly if you are already only doing cardio and resistance training exercises. There are so many important reasons and benefits to stretching. And it is important to point out because stretching often gets less attention when we are focusing on our fitness goals. If you have been taking my class you know that I use the method of strengthen, then stretch. We work a muscle group and then we stretch it right after. And for all the above reasons, I often advise my students to focus as much attention on the stretching portion of class as the strengthening.

There is one more important factor not listed above, and it’s the “happiness” factor. One thing that seems to top all the reasons one chooses one particular workout over another is because you love it and it makes you feel great. The reasons a person loves one workout over another can vary greatly and maybe hits other “check boxes” that are important for them personally: being in a group, learning a new skill, rehabilitating a particular injury, etc. So, if it’s not barre you love, no worries. You can find many ways to incorporate the cardiovascular training, strength training and stretching into your fitness routine. And if you do love my “ideal workout,” then great, I will see you at the barre!

New Ms Fit Feature: Caitlin Milbury

Caitlin Milbury, manager of Exhale Spa, Barre and Yoga Instructor

Caitlin Milbury, Mind Body Manager of Exhale Spa, Core Fusion and Yoga Instructor,  and brand ambassador for Crane and Lion.

Alisa and I met Caitlin at a charity event for the Boys and Girls Club almost a year ago.  The three of us were like a little Fitness-Fashion team that day getting ready for the event and ended up spending quite a few hours together. From the very start I felt like I had known Caitlin for years. She is one of those ultra-cool, laid back, but obviously very ambitious, hardworking types… and to top it all off very funny and a lot of fun to be around. It is therefore no surprise she is an amazing fitness instructor at Exhale Spa. Caitlin has a great way of inspiring and connecting with her students to make her classes ultra-challenging and fun at the same time.  I make it to her classes whenever I can and I highly recommend giving it a try.

WHAT IS KEEPING YOU BUSY THESE DAYS?

My fantasy football team! This is my first year participating in a league with my family and things are getting very competitive. I’ve also been doing some more reading (I still believe in the good old paperback book!), which I find incredibly meditative.

WHAT ARE YOU LOVING IN FITNESS AND FASHION RIGHT NOW?

I’m loving Crane and Lion! I’ve just recently been named their newest brand ambassador and I’m absolutely loving rocking all of their Fall items. I especially love the “moto jacket”.

In fitness, I am loving exhale’s newest class offering, Core Fusion Extreme. This class is a high intensity interval class that will leave your heart rate pumping and your new outfit drenched in sweat. While I love teaching barre and yoga first and foremost, it has been so fun to integrate this new class into my regiment.

WHY DID YOU BECOME A FITNESS INSTRUCTOR AND WHAT IS YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR BARRE BEGINNERS?

Growing up I found myself the captain of most of my sports teams. It has always sort of been in my nature to love motivating those around me. Once I started working at exhale and got the shakes in thigh work in my first class, I was sold. My passion and dedication to Core Fusion allowed me to become a candidate for the teacher training program. I have since then moved into managing the mind-body program at exhale Battery Wharf. It’s a gift to love your job.

My best advice for Core Fusion/barre beginners is to leave all expectations and judgements at the door. The number one concern for new students is that they are afraid they will be the one uncoordinated person in the back who everyone is staring at. The good news is, nobody is looking at you! Barre is a mind-body method that encourages each guest to focus inward and prioritize alignment over reps. Your teacher is there to help you learn and progress safely and your peers are there to create a sphere of positive and encouraging energy, not to judge you.

Jessica’s Studio Style & Music for Barre and Boxing:

No matter where I’m going to workout, I’m somehow always layered. I love layering! I always have an easy-to-throw-on sweatshirt or tee over a workout tank, even in the summer. I also love layering because I usually have somewhere to be right after class and this allows for quick transitions between workout to day or evening wear.

Here is what I am wearing and listening to right now during my two favorite workouts:

TO THE BARRE:

1. The Modern Classic from Gwenyth~ I have one in every color! It is the perfect top to wear to Barre and really everywhere. I love the ballet style and adjustable fit. I love how I can tie the sides up while I am teaching and then pull the sides down post class and pair with a sweater or cardigan to meet friends for coffee or run errands. It’s effortless!

2. Firedaughter Clothing’s off-the-shoulder Big Huge Heart Sweatshirt~ Anything off-the-shoulder is my favorite and Firedaughter has definitely perfected the off-the-shoulder look.  I have a collection of these types of inspirational tees and sweatshirts… and this is the perfect layer!

3. The perfect leggings~ For Barre, I’m usually wearing either the Splits Tendu grip tights or the Nova Capri legging from Splits59. I love the Tendu grip tights because of the grips on the bottom of the feet that work perfectly for helping hold that stretch at the Barre which means you don’t have to wear Barre socks. I also love the Nova Capri because they have the best fit of any legging I own.

4. Nike Wedge sneakers~ I am so thankful for the wedge sneaker! I am obsessed! It is the perfect fit-fashion invention. Throw these on with your workout outfit and immediately you can carry your workout look through the rest of the day. I always feel like I look better with a little height and they’re perfect to wear to a Barre workout because you actually do the workout in socks or barefoot.

5. Take your Barre look to dinner with Daniela Corte’s off the shoulder Ballet Top. As I said, I love everything off the shoulder. I just bought this top. I can throw it on with my workout leggings and I’m all ready for post Barre class fun.

TO KICKBOXING:

1. My prize possession. These were a limited edition item from Alexander Wang‘s Objects collection two years ago. They are 12 ounces of pure leather perfection!

2. The “Edgy” Legging~ I love these Daniela Corte Tracy Capri leggings in Python. They are the perfect legging for looking cool while you’re kicking butt.

3. The Ashby Tank and Loren Bra~ If you know me, you know there is a 75% chance I’m wearing at least one item that’s Splits59 at all times. And for kickboxing, it’s often the Ashby tank. It fits perfectly and I find that in workouts where I am sweating more like boxing or spin, the Ashby doesn’t get uncomfortable.

Spring Fashion Fit Pieces We Love

Gone are the days of limited options to choose from when getting ready to hit the gym. Today there are many great choices in workout lines that span from the traditional sports stores like Nike and Reebok, all the way to top designers like Chanel. Workout wear has really blazed its own space in the fashion industry in the past two years, even coining its own sub-categories like barrewear, FitFashion, Sports Couture, Luxletic and Athlesire, just to name a few. Celebrities like Kate Hudson, Carrie Underwood, Heidi Klum, Beyonce, Jillian Michaels, Rhianna, Brooke Burke and Rita Ora have also either created their own lines or aligned  themselves with activewear brands.

Even though it doesn’t quite feel like spring in New England, just yet, here are few fashionable-fit pieces to help motivate you on your final sprint to bikini season:

A Look Back…and a Big and Bright Look Forward

Before the New Years ball dropped, we were reminiscing about 2014 in our usual format: early morning coffee shop, half listening to one and other, half keeping our kids from causing massive destruction, all while taking “notes” on coffee stained napkins. We decided to take a look back at our very first MsFit post “Freshly Hatched,” (see below). What we loved so much about it is everything we wanted to happen with Ms Fit For Society in 2014… actually did happen! Especially Alisa rocking some short shorts.. whoohooo!!

Who wears short shorts? Me! Finally!

Who wears short shorts? Me! Finally!

I think one of the things we are most proud of is the success of our two big Ms Fit Events in 2014. Our two events raised over $50,000 in sales with a nice portion of that going to the American Heart and American Stroke Association!

Ms Fit has become something much bigger than we ever thought it would be when we sat down to write our very first post. A big part of our success is due to all of you, your encouragement, your sharing with us, your helping us inspire through your features and support and suggestions! Our sincerest thank you! Another piece of this, when we started a year ago, the bond between fitness and fashion was just catching on… now the two are inseparable, just look through the pages of any fashion magazine.

We are filled with excitement and anticipation for what 2015 will bring, whom we will get to feature, and how many new amazing Ms Fits we will meet. We have some big plans and we are going to be working our butts off to see 2015 be even bigger and brighter!

Read our “Freshly Hatched” article below…

Here’s to a fit and extremely fabulous 2015!

FRESHLY HATCHED      Posted March, 2014

So now that I have your undivided attention, I wanted to announce some breaking news to you guys. I am super excited about the new addition to my life, it’s still early on, but I just couldn’t wait to tell everyone that I am…. launching a new venture in fashion!!! Oh, did you think it was something else? I’m still trying to get my pre-preggo body back… that is definitely not in the cards for me right now.

Which brings me to this venture… Before I had LL, I had no clue, not even a fascination of how hard it is to bounce back, drop all the baby weight and feel 100% normal (body wise… brain wise, I’m still working on it). I think it took me about 14 months to get back to my exact weight before getting pregnant which is understandable, but much too long for me. It was too long to wait to fit into all of my skin tight dresses, it took too long to see my cellulite disappear for my short shorts and silk pants, too long to tone up my legs and ass to even fathom sporting a bikini, never mind my poor 5 inch heels that suffered the brunt of it supporting my overweight ass. You get the [overweight] picture.

This time around, I’m not messing around, especially with spring right around the corner. One of my favorite days of the year is when I spend hours taking out all of my spring and summer clothing out of storage (which I conveniently and cruelly labeled “skinny bitch clothes”), and I just know that I won’t be able to mentally handle not fitting into everything again.

Luckily, I have my best friend, my partner in crime and my greatest motivator in my arsenal this time around. I bestow an enormous token of gratitude to the ex-196-pounder Jessica Diaz, into kicking my ass into full gear and helping me to drop almost all of my baby #2 weight. As a professional barre instructor, she challenged me to take one of her barre classes and I was immediately obsessed. If you’ve never done barre, you should. That’s all I have to say. Combine ballet + pilates + embarrassing leg shaking + can’t move the next 3 days, that = how you get your body back.

And now you ask about this new venture that I was so excited to tell you about… Jessica and I always talk about the affects of how both of our professions profoundly increase our clients’ self confidence, sex appeal and energy level, not to mention how it opens their eyes to new possibilities in fashion trends and risk taking. Putting the obvious aside, we thought about how amazingly well fitness and fashion go together, and more so than anyone really likes to talk about. Our new baby is this venture together; bringing our clients, readers, mamas, instagram and Facebook followers all of the greatest and newest in what fitness and fashion have to challenge us with every season.

My short shorts have nothing on me this year because I’ve been doing my barre squats, along with my seat work. I’ve resurrected my crop tops and stocked up on some new ones (can you have too many?) because I’ve been doing my core work and planks (cheated a few times, for sure), and I have confidence that my booty will be as close to bootilicious as the had-two-babies excuse can allow by summer because I’ve been painstakingly doing my legs lifts with a ball, with a strap, with weights and with every last ounce of energy I have!

We’ve starting slowly, as every new project does, but hope that you guys love what we have to say and share and hopefully together we can change and inspire even more mamas out there that think that their temple of a body went out with the bag full of dirty diapers.

Birth Announcement:

Ms. Fit for Society

Born: 2014 Weight: touchy subject Height: the top of the world

Both mamas and baby are healthy and doing just great!

Whether you’re a new mama or someone craving a boost of motivation for the new year, we really hope that we can inspire you with not just how you see yourself on the outside, but more importantly how you feel on the inside. For some it’s bouncing back after baby, or motivation to run a marathon, maybe even take on that career they’ve always wanted, or travel to a far off land, perhaps it’s writing a book or getting back in the dating scene and finding their one true love. Whatever it may be, to each his own, leave all judgements on the table and just go out and do it… and maybe we’ll even be lucky enough to hear about it from you!

Love,

Ms Fit For Society

It Is Officially Holiday Party Season! Get Ready For It With the “Party Girl Dip”

The Party Girl Dip

The Party Girl Dip, illustration by Victor Hernandez

The Party Girl Dip, illustration by Victor Hernandez

Happy December!!!! A sure way to feel party ready this holiday season is to get those arms ready for any sleeve style, even a fitted long sleeve looks better with shapely triceps.  The “tricep-dip” or “reverse push-up” is easy to do at home and requires no equipment. This is a foundation exercise in Barre and can be really effective if done consistently and with the correct form.

To set up:

Take a seated position on the floor. Bend your knees and keep feet flat on the floor. Bring your arms right below shoulders. Your fingertips will be facing your toes. Make sure to keep your wrists turned forwards toward your feet and slightly outwards. Do not let your fingers face behind you. If your wrists are backwards, you’re going to be putting too much pressure on the wrist joints and will not be able to control the movement in your arms. To get into the proper alignment, you need to make sure that your shoulders are directly above your wrists.  If you allow your shoulders to come forward of the wrists, you will loose the work in the back of the arm.

Once your arms and wrists are in the right alignment. Lift your hips off the floor. Pull your abs in, and the lift your hips a bit higher. Then shift your weight back. Imagine you are trying to get your ribs in between your forearms. The more you can shift your weight towards your fingers, the more challenging and effective this will be.

Now you are ready to start to move! Start to bend your elbows directly behind you. Really important, do not let your elbows rotate out to the side… at all. Make sure your elbows are bending directly behind you. Do not move your hips. Your hips stay still. You want all the work happening in the back of the arms. Start to bend and stretch behind the elbows. Start with 15 repetitions.  Bend and stretch. Try not to fully extend behind the elbows. You don’t want to hyper-extend the arms.

Be mindful to not let your hips drop towards the floor or travel away from your fingertips.  Stay in your challenge zone. Hips stay high and ribs stay as close to your forearms as you can.

Once you have completed your 15 reps, bend your elbows deeply. And start to pulse. 10-15 pulses, staying deep in that muscle (do not straighten those arms). You can repeat this sequence 2-3 more times. If you want even more challenge. Try lifting one leg straight into the air. Bend your right knee, draw it in towards your chest, and then straighten it. Try to get the ankle directly above the hip. Continue your arm repetitions and then switch to your left leg half-way through.

 Stretch

Lengthen the muscles you just strengthened. Sit cross legged on the floor. Sit tall, long neck and a long spine. Lift your right arm up and behind you until your right palm is touching your right shoulder blade. To deepen the stretch, with your left hand gently guide your elbow in towards your self and back. Then switch sides.

Party arms ready to shine this holiday season!

If you have any questions about this exercise or any others, please feel free to send me a note!

It’s Getting Hot in Here… Our Love for Firedaughter Clothing

Samya Cochran. Owner and Designer of Firedaugther Clothing

Samya Cochran. Owner and Designer of Firedaugther Clothing

When we first came up with the idea to feature people as part of what Ms Fit For Society would be about, Samya was seriously one of the very first people I thought of.  Her name popped right into my head because she is the definition of fitness and fashion. Not only is she incredibly fit but she creates the most unique and awesome clothing. Her designs are so fitness, so casual, so cool – the  phrases she chooses always inspire me to want to be more fit. I also fell in love with her designs because they just send that clear message that she wants you to have fun while balancing everything else you are doing.

I don’t think Samya knows this, but I feel like she has been almost like my “silent  fitness-stylist partner” in starting  my Barre business 2 years ago. She created my very first Barre shirt “Meet Me at the Barre” and many others since, (“Raise the Barre”, “Barre Star”). I also seemed to have compiled a small wardrobe just of Fireduaghter clothing. And without fail, I cannot leave my house in one of her designs without be stopped and asked “where did you get that?” I truly feel like her designs matched the instructor/Barre-loving/fitness-crazed person that I was working on becoming and the brand that I was trying to create. She has inspired me with her clothing, her hard work, her openness, her success and her passion for everything fitness and fashion.

My very first Barre photo, in this shirt designed by Samya.

My very first Barre photo, in this shirt designed by Samya.

The name Firedaughter was created while Samya was trying to find something for her own daughter to wear to show how proud she was of her firefighter husband. She couldn’t even find one item for daughters of firefighters. So Samya decided to create her own designs, and there Firedaughter was born.

Samya with her Firefighter and children

Samya with her firefighter and children

Samya went on to expand Firedaughter to also incorporate clothing  that spoke to her passion for fitness. I love what Samya says about her fitness clothing: “The Firedaughter view on fitness is very specific. My shirts tell the story of my fitness life, and my outlook on fitness. There are a billion fitness cliches- check out a fitness page on Pinterest and you’ll see so many cliches you’ll lose count. To me though, fitness is not a cliche, and I’m not interested in cliches. I’m also not interested in being better than you. You will never see a shirt in my shop telling you that my workout is superior to your workout. I don’t need to be better than you, I just need to be the best ME. Firedaughter women are the women at the gym who are in amazing shape but who aren’t trying to intimidate you. You can go up to a Firedaughter woman, in all her beauty and in all her fit-ness, and you can ask her how to use a machine. And you can ask her what she does to look like that, and she’ll welcome your questions and she’ll answer you warmly. Firedaughter girls don’t need to tell you they’re better than you, and they don’t live by cliches. They do what works and they’re grateful that they are blessed with lives that allow them to take care of themselves. Being in shape, living a fit life… it’s not easy. It’s the opposite of easy. But easy isn’t rewarding, and easy doesn’t make you feel joy and beauty. FD 4eva”. -Samya.

If you haven’t checked out Firedaughter clothing it is a must! Firedaughter is not just for Barre enthusiasts, her designs include designs for life, love, yoga, running, sports, kids, fitness and more.

I am also loving some of her newer design and holiday pieces:

Booty with a Purpose

Now that summer is over (unofficially), it’s time to focus on all the things that make fall great. The most important being, your fall wardrobe, and within that, everybody’s staple, their jeans. For anyone that knows me, knows that I’ve never really been a jeans kinda gal… somehow over the last few years, I’ve gotten away with rocking leggings, skirts and dresses… ok, on occasion, I’ve donned a pair of jeans, but for the most part, I’ve been denim free.

This year, I have rekindled my love for jeans, I think, partly due to the fact that I’ve literally gotten my ass into gear this summer thru my barre workouts.  And what better way to show off those buns than in a pair of denim beauties.

The glutes are one of the biggest muscles in your body, so working them is not always the easiest of feats, but getting into a workout that shows results and a workout that you can easily do at home will get you to booty happiness in no time.

Check out our latest Ms Fit Moves video here…. A quick tutorial on Jessica’s favorite glutes workout that will really give you a booty with a purpose.

MsFit Feature: Michele Cheowtirakul Braxton

I was so thrilled when Michele said yes to doing a MsFit Feature because, #1: the Modern Classic is amazing and #2: because Michele is so cool and inspiring. I love her story of how she combined her passion of everything dance and movement with fashion, to create for all of us activewear-obsessed, such an amazing product… the Modern Classic.

I fell in love with the Modern Classic the first moment I laid eyes on it and I immediately pre-ordered three of them. I placed my first orders and waited weeks for them to be ready to ship. I remember counting down the weeks until they arrived. And boy was that a great day when they did! In the meantime, while waiting for my orders, I had quite a few communications with Michele. There were a few updates, some fabric changes, slight change in ship dates, etc… and I remember thinking how pleasant dealing with her was and how her customer service was beyond excellent! I knew this was someone who was going to run an amazing business.

I now own a mini collection of Modern Classics (waiting on the brand new Modern Classic in the Ballet Pink color). I love them because you can scrunch them up for working out, then walk out of class and pull them down into a tunic and head right to lunch, errands or meetings. For me, it is a perfect piece that easily goes from barre-wear to day-wear to any-wear. I also am loving how now when I drive around my neighborhood, seeing my barre lovelies rocking the modern classic in my local coffee shops, parks, barre classes, and just walking down the street. My mommy group that attends my Baby Barre classes really loved the Modern Classic because it is so adjustable, it worked for them post-baby and was great for breastfeeding.

Thank you Michele for creating such a fabulous top + tunic!

WHAT IS KEEPING YOU BUSY THESE DAYS?

The color pink actually… To herald the release of the Modern Classic Top and Tunic in Ballet Pink, we are doing a little project we lovingly call PITNB (pink is the new black). I’ve never been much of a pink wearer, but we custom dyed our signature fabric to create this amazing shade that’s like a neutral color but still very ballet and definitely pink. We originally developed it in response to interest from a lot of our dance supporters. But now I am in love with it and am finding myself obsessing about other pink things! So lately, the whole office is in pink-think, with pink frames, pink images, anything pink – I even got a pink mani pedi, which I have never done!

Aside from the temporary pink insanity, I’m also working with the team on testing several new designs, replenishing the colors we’ve sold out of, and figuring out what new Modern Classic colors everyone wants! It’s so fun talking to our customers who enjoy what we’re doing and hearing about what they like, what we could do better, and what else they want to see. So to summarize, I am tickled pink and feel pretty lucky that gwenyth and our energetic team has been keeping me really busy.

WHAT ARE YOU LOVING IN FITNESS AND FASHION RIGHT NOW?

So many things, especially as we are now based in fitness and fashion savvy LA. But two interrelated things in particular. The first is the continual growth and acceptance of low impact, movement based disciplines like barre, pilates and dance as primary exercise regimens. I love it when I meet young, former hardcore marathon runners, cross-fitters or even triathletes who have transitioned to these types of workouts. These are the people that are about results and who are no-joke when it comes to athletic performance and fitness. And yet they see something like barre as totally challenging and edifying. That really speaks to me.

The second thing I’m loving is the variety and romance I’m seeing in activewear fashion, as these “softer” fitness disciplines have taken off. So I love that Stella McCartney’s line for Adidas has gotten girlier and that Net-a-Porter has been featuring ballet-inspired activewear. Activewear used to look like just activewear… it could hardly be described as pretty for fear that it would give the impression of not being durable or technical enough. But with workouts like barre and pilates kicking even men in the behind, I feel like women are more accepting of the idea that something can be both elegant and tough. And that’s the duality we thrive on – how can we make something beautiful, precious and delicate looking while also being innovative and high-performing? If women are “tough” packaged in “pretty”, why can’t their activewear be as well?

Fit for Flats

Fashionistas know that a quick fix to making your calves look more defined is to throw on a pair of sky-high heels… this creates an instantaneous improvement in appearance and tone in the calves. But what about keeping that defined look in your calves while wearing one of this season’s hottest trends- the espadrille?

With espadrilles and flats becoming more and more popular in ways that we couldn’t have ever imagined, even asserting themselves in our going out on the town wardrobe, wouldn’t it be nice to have the same glistening toned calves without teetering in a 6 inch pair of heels?

To get those eye-catching Barre defined calves, Ms Fit is sharing some safe, quick and effective moves to help you get those long lean curves of a dancer’s calves. And, to get you started on your collection of this spring’s hottest espadrilles, browse through our picks of must-have espadrilles.

MsFit Challenge~ We would love to see YOUR espadrilles on MsFit. Post a pic on Instagram or Facebook of your favorite pair and tag #msfitforsociety. Looking forward to seeing your fitness and fashion come to us!

How to get it: Heel Lifts

And don’t forget to check out our VIDEO tutorial here

1)              Standing facing a barre or sturdy chair or surface that is sturdy enough to use for balance

2)              As you are facing the barre or chair, bring your body just about 6-8 inches away from the barre or chair. Finger tips lightly placed onto the bar.

3)              While facing the bar, stand with your feet hip distance and parallel to the bar. Bring your heels together and toes apart to make a V shape with your feet (like “first position” in ballet). Toes should be just about 3 inches apart. Squeeze your heels together, grip your seat to engage your glutes, pull your abdominals in, while keeping the spine long, standing tall (think long dancer necks), start to lift and lower heels up and down. Even as you lift keep your heels glued together. 10-20 reps. For more of a challenge, release one or both arms over head and keep lifting heels.

4)              For even more of a challenge and to tone even more of your legs, step your feet further apart into a wide  ballet “second position”. Look down to make sure that your feet are further than hip distance apart. We are adding on with “second position” to start to engage, strengthen and elongate the quadriceps, glutes, and inner and outer thighs. Once again, start to lift and lower heels about 20-30 repetitions.

To make this exercise even more challenging. Lower heels. Keep your feet flat, stay in a wide second position. Drop your tailbone, bend your knees slightly. From your lower point, start to just pulse down an inch and up an inch. Option to raise one or both hands over head.

The higher the heels, the closer to perfection!
